What kind of fish do Angels get along with/not get along with?

With adults, try Corys, Zebra danios, tetras, guppies, and a few others with small mouths and nice dispositions. Angels may tatter fins on slow-moving fish.

Avoid fin nippers like Gouramis. ANY fish will eat eggs and young fry, including new parents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

I only keep Angels nowadays -- perhaps other users can add to this list. Your local pet shop would be a good place to ask.

One day I woke up and my Angel Fish (called Hugh) had my loach (called Jane) halfway down its throat. I quickly got up and watched this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Luckily Hugh didn't eat any more of my loaches.

I've heard that fish will eat any other that can fit the mouth... A Loach is a pretty bad fit, you'd think.  Thank goodness my Angels have little mouths. When they're breeding, they try to eat ME!

I have an angel fish, she just laid eggs, there is no male, only one angelfish. Does this happen often. Should I get a male angelfish, if the female is ready to breed. Did she lay eggs because she has reached a certain age. She is approximately 1 yr. old. Is it a matter of age of fish?

Yes, it does happen... but she will usually give up after one or two tries, in my experience. Getting a proven male will be tricky, in most places, since it's so hard to identify M or F when they are not breeding. Write and tell me where you live and I can send your address on to breeders in your area.

Angels can breed from 6 months on, it's a matter of size and conditioning.

I feel like we are using an antiquated system of feed brine shrimp. We use teaspoons and measuring cups. needless to say they (the fry) don't always get the appropriate amount of shrimp. Do you have any suggestions?

How much / how often of ANY food is a great question, well worth including in the FAQ. I keep the bottom real clean and suck up excess after a few hours. BBS (LIVE baby brine shrimp) will live in fresh water for several hours, which is good. With other foods, the critical thing is NOT to sour the water with bacteria bloom when the food rots. Adults and juveniles will still beg for food even when they're full... watch their belly size before feeding again, and observe to see if they just chew and spit before swallowing!

Feed your fry BBS two to four times daily. Feed others dry food one to four times a day. If you're going out of town, you may leave healthy fish totally unattended for a week, best if your sitter won't hang around to siphon off any excess... I still like to have someone check for dead fish every other day or so, though, and maybe feed a very small amount, only what they'll eat while the sitter is standing at the tank.

Use your eyes and nose; rotten food and waste will stink up the water and give you some clues.

What is the tank size for breeding pair? (Minimum)

Five gallons in a pinch. Ten is better.

How can I keep nice and long lace angelfish?

Tall tanks are better than short ones... or their fins will lie on the bottom and get attacked by bacteria and bugs, and get ragged.

Do you know where can I order altum angelfish internationally? Thank you.

Check this Dogpile search for Altum Angelfish. One link there shows a place in California that had 10 Altums for sale 8/29/99 -- see http://www.nautilusfish.com/

Hi, For the fry, I did not feed them with brine shrimp. I separate some from the parents. Those with the parents survive well but were eaten up by the parents after few days. The rest of the fry just died after they were separated from the parents even I feed them with fry food. Is there any other solution?

1) Read the FAQ page at My Angelfish FRY are dying. What can I do?
2) Learn to raise baby brine shrimp.

I think I have two female angel fish, One has laid eggs twice. The eggs were not fertilized, and reading your description of what a female verses Males is like, I assuming I have two females. The eggs were gone this morning when we woke and the two angels were fighting horribly. I don't understand why this is happening, they have been together since they were babies. Could you help me understand what is going on with them. I am afraid they will no make it thru the night.

Even my best pairs can get peeved and the weaker one get hurt. In nature, it would just swim away. I put in a partition when this happens, and remove it after a few days, and watch them VERY closely.

We purchase three angel fish two weeks ago. We noticed that on a flat piece of marble there were 500+/- eggs. Within 24hrs some of the eggs turned white. By the end of 48hrs 90% of the eggs were white. The remaining eggs are clear with small white specs inside. Are these still alive? We plan to wait & see. Being a beginner on angel fish I am looking for as much info. as possible.

White eggs are dead eggs. Clear are alive. See the page at What happens during the first week?

Thanks so much for all the useful information. I received 2 dozen angelfish from an individual. They are beautiful and healthy, but 2 have problems that I would like to ask about. One has almost no scales--I isolated it and added Stress Zyme and Stress Coat to the water. It is active and doesn't act sick. What else can I do for this poor fish and how did it lose its scales? The other one doesn't have a gill, but assume it is a developmental problem or maybe too much inbreeding. Does it need special care, and if so, what? Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

That IS a mystery about missing scales in an otherwise healthy fish!

Missing gill covers is a flaw that shows up now and then in even very good strains. You should never breed one of these, of course, and be leery about breeding its relatives, if you have  a choice.

Is there a filter that is safe to use with angelfish fry in a small tank?

Also, for people who have most of their eggs turn white, try turning off your filters when you see the fish getting ready to spawn and while the eggs are hatching ( this means changing water more frequently) Thank you.

Regarding filtration of fry tanks. I use small pore sponge filters in my 10 gal fry tanks. In my 20 gal fry grow out tanks I use a small pore sponge filter and an aqua clear mini, with a quarter of a small pore sponge filter cut and slipped over the aqua mini`s intake tube. This works well as long as you clean the filters once a week. You can also use this for your fry tanks, just add air bubbles under the min`s intake to keep the very young fry from getting stuck to it. I cant take credit for this strategy. I read it somewhere on the net :), and used it myself to good effect.

Thanks for the suggestion, I also have used a side-mounted Whisper filter, protecting the babies by wrapping the intake with a small nylon mesh. But, it's really a bother, now I use sponge filters everywhere.

You answered almost everything---but can you directly tell me what to do?:

I recently started purchasing angelfish---I did not quarantine my fish. I have had about 7 angelfish and not at one time 1-2 die, then I would get 2 more or so. Well now I am down to 4 with one on it's way out--or so it seems (he is not moving and seems to be stuck to the plant in the tank--has not moved in about an hour or more--it's fins are moving--but the fish has not moved from this area and is stuck in an upwards posture). Should I remove him/destroy him?? I also have a 5 tetras and 2 catfish/dwarfs in a 20gallon tank with: air stone, canister filter, plants, a piece of wood and some plants.

Please help my poor fish :(

I change the water 1/4 to 1/2 every other day. I add all the necessary ingredients to the water (d-chlorinator). pH: 7 temp: 82 deg. nitrite: 0 ammonia: 0

Sounds like you're doing the right things, Vicky. But do be careful about mixing fish from a new or unknown source with your healthy stock. Best to keep new ones in a separate room; put a really weak fish (a cull, if you have one) in with the new stock to see if it survives. If not, take all the new ones back to where you got them, or flush them.

You might move your sick fish to a 10 gallon tank with a heater set at 95F for a week or so... this can kill parasites and speed up the metabolism and healing process, if you're lucky.

I have a pair of silver angels that laid eggs on Sunday(4 days ago) and last night they were wiggling. I was concerned about them because they are on a plant. I put slate underneath this spot in case any fell, but I can't really tell if any did fall. They cleaned off another leaf that is flat and began putting the wigglers there. This morning it looked like all the eggs were transferred to the other leaf-minus the few white ones which were gone. They are also checking the bottom for the ones that had fallen and placing them back on the leaf. What really surprises me is that this is the first batch that I know about and they seem to be doing great for first-timers. I bought them as a pair 3 months ago and kept them in a 20 long for awhile. In that tank I think they tried but they cleaned the leaves so well that they put holes in all of the plants. I have them now in a 29 gallon ( minus the gold nugget which had to be removed) where they immediately began their business. Hopefully they will survive throughout the entire ordeal.

I do have one question- How can you tell the difference between a silver angel and a Black Ghost angel?

The Silver Angel has the appearance of the "wild" Angel. The vertical stripes fade when they're hiding, are darkest when they want attention... begging for food, showing off during mating rituals, or defending fry. I call them "mood rings". The Black Ghost? I've only seen pictures of these, but apparently the vertical stripes are faint or missing.

I have been raising angelfish for about 6 years. I currently have 8 breeding pairs I raise the eggs artificially. I've tried many times to let the parents raise the eggs but they end up eating the eggs or the babies. Can you give me any tips ?

Keeping fry alive is a big problem. I'm gathering material to make a new entry in the ABFAQ: My fry are dying... what can I do?

Sometimes one of a pair will eat the eggs right off the slate, as soon as they are spawned, or eat them all the next morning, mistaking their progeny for caviar. But if they survive to show tails and wiggle, then it's VERY unlikely the parents will eat any live, healthy fry. Parents are constantly mouthing fry, moving them from one place to another. They apparently will eat DEAD fry, though. So, my guess is that your problem is, keeping fry alive.

My angels laid their eggs on the vertical face which is the back of my tank-cleaning magnet. As the fry hatched and grew they slid down and dangled in columns below the magnet, happily munching on leftover eggs and slower hatching siblings. The fry seem to have finished eating the eggs and now are lying on the floor of the clear plastic breeding tank eating each other, ignoring the food I'm offering, and seemingly unable to swim even though .(day 7) This is the first time I've hatched egg-layers so I'm not sure to expect, although THIS is a great site and has been very helpful. Q: Should I expect the magnetic field to have interfered with the development of the fry's' ability to swim? Q: Is sera micron or powdered freeze-dried bloodworm an inappropriate food?

Angel fry, for 4 to 6 weeks, have very tiny mouths. They couldn't possibly eat their siblings, in my opinion. If you're offering any food other than LIVE BABY BRINE SHRIMP, your chances of raising any live fry are very slim. Magnetism interfering with swimming? I doubt it.

If 'sera micron' or 'powdered freeze-dried bloodworm' work, let me know; I gather data on ways to raise fry without using live baby brine shrimp, and will publish it eventually. Mostly, I preach LIVE BABY BRINE SHRIMP, and describe a fool-proof hatchery that should make it easy. In my opinion, anyone that can't figure THAT out is unlikely to be able to handle the problems Another guest here says she has raised 75 using 'liquifry', boiled egg yolk suspension, and frozen baby brine shrimp. I once raised 50 using decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. The biggest problem is figuring how much to feed... and keeping the tank clean. Massive daily water changes may help. Fry that eat dead food tend to overeat, get sluggish, and loll about on the tank floor with waste and decaying food, where they are attacked by bacteria and other bugs.

I have a potential pair of angelfish. They flash their fins and lock jaws. But the one angel fish is starting to grow fungus on its mouth from the locking jaws......what should I do about this? Let them keep on doing it or put the hurt fish in another tank and quarantine it?

Lip lockers are almost certainly boy and girl, congratulations. The one with a swollen belly is the female. If she (or he) stops eating, get her out, or better, put a partition in for a few days until she heals. Put the breeding slate on HER side, ao the male will not think it's his private property when you remove the partition! Watch them VERY closely when you remove the partition... and give them another 3-5 days time-out if injury persists.

I read all the articles and want to get started breeding mine. I just got a 55 gallon tank that has a pair of mated silver ones. I have a marble one that is in there that supposedly had a mate but it died. Can you have two pairs in the same tank. Should I find another marble.

You'll have to watch the non-paired Angel closely. A large, dominant female, might cow the other two. She might try to help rasing them, or might eat the eggs... especially if she's very young. I use partitions to give a pair some privacy in a large tank. But, you'll have to raise the fry seperately.

Also how often do they mate. once a month or once a week

Every 10 days if everything is ideal, lots of water changes.

Just wanted to tell you thanks for the site it was really helpful. By the way I need to know about water. I use tap water and the chemical to take the chlorine

Caution ... chlorine isn't the problem any more, all US water suppliers now use Chloramine, which is persistent (won't dissipate on standing.) You must use a Chloramine removing chemical, or better, a counter-top activated Carbon filter, which removes Chloramines and other toxic organics. (Some folks can't raise fry without this filtration!)

out then methylene blue and 2 drops per ten gallons then I put in 1 teaspoon of salt per 10 gallons. The fish store insisted I use this methodology for happy fish.

Salt is relatively harmless, but not needed. Angels do just fine in distilled, demineralized, or reverse-osmosis (R/O) water, or in New Orleans water, 600ppm NaCl (0.6%). Lots of pet shops recommend it. They probably also sell you 'sea salt' at very high prices. Any non-iodized food-grade sale works just as well... and in the case of Angels, not at all. Still, it's the ONLY medication I ever try, besides 5 drops of Methylene Blue per 10 gallons -- ONCE -- when I've moved new, unhatched eggs away from the parents.

I have two questions:

I have a pair of angels that have started laying eyes and am setting up to remove the eggs to be raised in a separate tank, but I am not sure what kind of angels they are they are both black There is a faint stripe of black under the black Can you help me to identify them to the type they are.

A picture might help, but there are  dozens of possible mixtures among blacks. Some you can't prove until you breed them and see their children and grandchildren! Study genetics at www.angelsplus.com ...

Also I have a second pair in the same tank (silvers) that I believe are getting ready to start breed themselves, can they be kept in the same tank or should I set up a separate tank for each pair. They are in a 30 gallon tall tank with 3 Groumees, a glass cat and upside-down cat and an algae eater. And if I need separate them can I use a 10Gallon tank for the time being.

Even getting two parents into shape where they will not eat their own eggs is a problem. I predict a lot of problems keeping ANY fish other than the pair in a breeding tank. And... some adults simply will not breed in a tank as small as 10 gallons.

Thank You for your help on this matter as well as for all the information available on this great site. It is very helpful to me as a new breeder.

Thank you, I enjoy helping out.

How do I breed the Albino Angelfish ? I removed the eggs from the parents and 80% of these eggs hatched but they never reach to the free swimming stage. From Day 3 to 5, I have even tried to changed 50% of the water daily after the eggs were hatched. of the water daily after the eggs were hatched

I'm not aware of any special care needed for Albinos. 'Fry Dying' is a problem even experienced breeders suffer now and then. See my page on this topic, My Angelfish FRY are dying. What can I do?

Hello, I have a community tank which includes (5 different types of tetras, swordtails, platys, bala sharks, guppy, pleco and anglefish) I orginally had 2 angelfish but one recently died. I have noticed that since that time all the other fishes mentioned above are now going after my last remaining anglefish (2 inches in size). They chase him, nip at his tail and pick on him/her all the time were they never did this before when I had two. I am new to fish keeping. I have check several web pages but can not find anything to answer my question. Why are they suddenly picking on her when they never did before. Do you need at least 2 angelfish in order for them to fill secure enough to chase back are stop the other fish from bothering it? Security in numbers (for the angelfish)? I have placed my angel in a breeding trap to give her/him time to recover. Any advice you can give me would be most appreciated. Thanks

After you have a pair breeding, how many times can the pair breed before they need a break? In other words, when they are breeding every 10 days to two weeks, how many spawnings can I expect before they stop the cycle?

I have a pair that recently began spawning. They have done this twice now. How often will they spawn, and for how long during their life? I tried to put a divider in my 55 gal tank and leave the parents with them, but that hasn't worked. I'm setting up a second tank to prepare for the next spawning. Thanks, Mike

Ok,I have some liplockers. I read where you said that they're probably male and female, but those aren't the two that I want to breed. I have four angelfish in all,all in the same tank. The other two,the ones that I do want to breed are more calm and docile. They usually end up side by side, hiding behind one of the plants while the others fight. Out of the two that I do want to breed,I'm positive that one is a female, because her belly is bigger, actually, she's the only angel with a larger stomach. The other one that she hides with,I'm almost positive he's a male because of the shape of the papilla thing. So.....what should I do to get the two that I don't want to breed to stop fighting?

I bought what looks like a Gold Vail looks to be about 16 weeks (quarter size) put it in with two 4 and 1/2 weeks old black marbles, about nickle size noticed the 2 smaller ones dorsal fins are splitting. Could this be the bigger fish biting them or, are they sick? Gold Veil seems to be aggressive when feeding time. Smaller ones seem to be fine just splitting dorsal fin worries me. What should I do?

How long does the mamma fish carry her eggs before she lays them. I may just have a fat fish!

A gravid female shows only a slight bulge. Bloating may be called 'egg bound' but is a symptom of many possible things -- a tumor or parasites are possible. I've had fat fish live on for months. When they quit eating, they die. I've never had one recover; if you do, write us again with details.

My pair of angel fish have laid eggs for the first time. However I have a large community tank andf they have laid eggs on the side of the filter. I would like to save as many eggs as possible. What sort of tank should I buy for the eggs and how do I transport them from the filter. Do I wait until they hatch? I have put a net in my tank to stop the shark from eating the eggs he seemed very interested in them last night!

I was wondering if I could feed the fry "livebearers baby fry food". I live in a small town and the only places in the next city for fish is a pet store. I is not like a super pet or any place like that so they don't have much stuff to help raise fish. The livebearers food I have is a real fine powder. It worked well for the swordtail frys. I have no idea where to even find brine shrimp, so if you can give me an idea that might help. I'm in Canada, so we may not have the same stores. I only have a few days before some hatch, so if you could help me it would be great. Thanks
